FACT: I was an extra in the Shawshank Redemtion. STORY: On the first day I had ever spent on a movie set, as a young 23 something Ohio "boy", and after witnessing one of the most amazing things I had ever seen at the time; which was Morgan Freeman acting in front of a giant camera against a prison backdrop I had known my entire life: I decided that I was going to swap Morgan Freemans cap with mine in hopes that some of his amazing talent would rub off on my head! Now as an extra you were supposed to turn in your cap and prison uniform at the end of each day. I did not mind turning in the shirt and pants but there was no way I was parting with the cap I worked very hard to be sneaky about obtaining.

Additionally I was not wearing a cap that who knows what other guy wore before me. However, on the next to the last day I had left the cap at home because it was not being used that day on the set and much to my dismay I was informed when I arrived that I would not need to return for the last day as I was not needed.

So with no reason to appear on the morning bus full of extra's I wound up keeping the cap. The difference between a fact and a story is verification. I can prove I was in the movie.

I can prove I spent 15 very long 12-14 hour days on the set. I can prove the cap is authentic.

I can prove I was in the shower scene (because you can see me). The story is that I can not prove that Morgan actually wore the hat I swapped.

It's just my story. For 25 years it has been good enough for me because I know this, because I did it, and that was enough for me as I never imagined trying to sell it. Now with this sin confessed - I can prove the cap is authentic and have done so by obtaining a certificate of authenticity that I had signed and notarized by the screen credited Wardrobe assistant who is also listed in the IMdB as such. That would have required I actually go to an audition! The funds from the sale will go to his cause. Mind you - without their caps! Additionally, I have never seen another cap from the movie for sale and I believe its because they were destroyed. You see when 200+ sweaty guys all share caps over a month or so of 90 degree days of high humidity they tend to get a little unsavory.

My friend in wardrobe suggested they may have been destroyed. So here is a once in a lifetime chance to own a piece of movie history AND help someone in need of life saving treatments to be able to afford them. Your generosity helps me help another! And see the Shawshank Prison too! The item "The Shawshank Redemption Prisoner Cap Is this the only existing cap" is in sale since Saturday, January 28, 2017.
