BEETLEJUICE (1988) Adam Orig. Replacement Anim. Stop-Motion Bust #8
My name is Tim Lawrence and in June 1987 I was contracted by the Geffen Film Company to create two 1/4 -scale replacement animation shots to be cut into Tim Burtons movie, Beetlejuice. Since then, these pieces have always been in my possession, nearly 30 years. When you see the movie, you see these pieces. Another interesting Historical note: I can only remember 3 movies that used this replacement technique for transformations Craig Reardon sculpted a snake transformation for'Dreamscape', Dick Smith animated a Jeff Bridges transformation for'Starman' and I did these 2 for Beetlejuice. We discussed using'Morph' technology for the'Beetlejuice' shots but the computer expense at the time was too high. These'Beetlejuice' transformations are the last to be done with this technique. My expense report begins June 22, 1987 and ends November 28, 1987. Five full months of work. Lots of sculptures (about 35 heads per character), molds, clay and plaster.
This is one of the remaining replacement animation busts. There was no budget or schedule for plastic castings so the pieces are the original, painted clay sculptures - Roma #2 melted and mixed in proportion with some Kleen Klay. Bill Forsche and Scott Wheeler did the molds and castings. There's nothing to be done about the deterioration of Roma clay.
Over time it shrinks, hardens and cracks. But, these are the production originals and every time you see this movie you see these pieces. The heads are all numbered for the sequence and this is head number 8. Third image shows what it looked like on the stage.Should not be a problem.
