At this time I was asked to develop a budget and schedule for production of full-scale and miniature dinosaurs because originally ILM proposed to contribute all the practical as well as all the visual dinosaur fx. Soon after that I left to join Rick on Gremlins 2 and the following Summer, Steven called. He said Dennis Muren had recommended me as someone to help develop his dinosaur.
I remember saying You know, Im not a Dinosaur sculptor. And he said I dont want a dinosaur sculptor, I want a character sculptor to sculpt a dinosaur. So for about the next 8 weeks my company, Snark Safari Studios, produced maquettes of the T-Rex and one full-size head mock-up suspended from a crane to help visualize a 24' animal.
Shortly after I finished, Universal shut them down because theyd spent 2 million dollars and didnt have a script. Well, they had 220+ pages in a binder, but thats not a script.
Thats basically the novel without its cover. Some months later they cranked it all back up again and brought in Stan Winston. Offered is my personal copy of that very first development bust of the T-Rex for Jurassic Park. This is an important, historic piece. 9" x 8" on an 8 circular wooden base. Signed on bottom of base. I made one for Steven but I still have the mold (offered in the next listing) and who knows what happened to the other copy when everything went over to Stans in boxes? This might be the only one. The sculpture was approved and broken into 6 parts for the molds.
Thom Floutz made the molds and casts quick & dirty overnight so we could get the first model together ASAP. Also posted a pic of Mock-up day at Universal when we hung a foam head from a crane for Steven to photograph a 24' tall character. Kathleen Kennedy in black jacket on left, Frank Marshall in front on right leaning against head and me (in grey t-shirt) and Steven in the middle. Also posted pic of the Curious and Furious sculptures that were made from clay copies out of the mold for this model.
Also posted pic of my invoice for the work. The model was assembled from 6 pieces and the seams around the jaw and the gums were never filled (see pix). NOTE: I want to thank all the collectors who have followed my prop sales over the past couple years. Decades of my work in Hollywood special fx down to this, close to the very last stuff out of my storage and my files.
Though, you never know, the occasional piece may surface from time to time. Ive even listed some pieces I always intended to keep for myself but Ive entered a Simplify phase in my life so take advantage!
