Mary Of Scotland 1936 Wyndham Standing Doublet & Breeches
WYNDHAM STANDING'S DOUBLET & BREECHES as SERGEANT AT ARMS. KATHERINE HEPBURN / FREDRIC MARCH / JOHN CARRADINE / FLORENCE ELDRIDGE. This is a magnificent Outfit worn by WYNDHAM STANDING as a SERGEANT-AT-ARMS in'MARY OF SCOTLAND' (1936)!
It is done in a medium blue textured satin. The doublet has a small stand up collar with a row of blue velvet ribbon around the bottom edge of the collar - not the upper edge which they usually are. The blue velvet ribbon continues down each side of center front and around the lower part of the doublet just above the waist. This blue velvet ribbon is very worn and needs replacing. It fastens in the front with numerous hooks and eyes, however there is also a placket attached on the right side inside with 14 gorgeous round gold buttons.The long sleeves have padded crescents at the shoulders with a small cap sleeve attached there also done in dark blue velvet. There are 3 vertical rows of blue velvet and gold bullion ribbon from shoulder to wrist, however this blue velvet ribbon needs to be replaced also. The lower sleeves at the wrists fasten with hooks and eyes to keep them snug. The hem edge of the doublet has is padded round that matches the padded crescents at the shoulders and has a center front pointed hem.
The body of the doublet is lined in a light blue-gray quilted satin; the sleeves are lined in an ivory satin. The breeches are paned with the underneath done in a dark blue satin. The panes have gold bullion piping at each edge. They are lined in an ivory cotton. They have a button fly (original buttons) with hooks and eyes at the waist. The breeches have very minor wear. This is a VERY RARE COLLECTABLE Outfit!WYNDHAM STANDING'S career lasted from the 1915 through 1948. Just to name a few of his movies:'MRS. MARY OF SCOTLAND' (1936) starred KATHERINE HEPBURN, FLORENCE ELDRIDGE; FREDRIC MARCH; JOHN CARRADINE; RALPH FORBES; MORONI OLSEN and many others! There is much ado over whom Mary shall marry; to her later regret, she picks effete Lord Darnley over the strong but unpopular Earl of Bothwell. A palace coup leads to civil war and house arrest for Mary; she escapes and flees to England, where a worse fate awaits her. The doublet is a size 41; the breeches are a 34 waist!
Please keep in mind this outfit is at least 76 years old! There is some fraying and wear at the top of the shoulders / sleeves and collar due to age and being hung under the lights. There is light wear on the body and sleeves also. There are a few spots on the front of the doublet - I would recommend a professional cleaning.
