A Praetorian Guard Costume, Gladius and Shield from Ridley Scotts historical Roman epic, Gladiator. In the film, a betrayed Roman general seeks revenge for his murdered family after making his way to Rome as a slave. The Praetorian Guard serve Commodus (Joaquin Phoenix), the emperor of Rome. This complete costume includes body armor, greaves and gauntlets, helmet, leather boots, purple wool cape, tunic, trousers and singulum (the armored leather strips below the chest).
The helmet has been made from fiberglass, while the body armor is made from vacuformed plastic and painted to appear metallic. The tunic, pants, and cloak have been made from purple colored wool and include a draw string for the pants to fasten around the waist. Worn on the feet are a pair of leather boots with numerous straps that wrap around the legs for a snug fit. Paired with the costume is a large Praetorian Guard shield and a Gladius sword. The Gladius consists of a metal blade attached to a wooden handle with a rounded pommel, and fits within a wood scabbard with metal plating.
The curved shield is made from wood that has been covered in a canvas material that has been painted on both sides.
