Shooting all of Karloff's scenes in the four days remaining on his contract from The Raven, Corman culled together other footage shot over a period of two months by his stable of directors and came up with this existential pastiche of a gothic love story. Because of its patchwork of styles, settings and oblique narrative lapses, the film takes on a dreamlike quality that sets it apart from more linear and tightly scripted efforts in a similar vein.
