Former Green Beret, LAPD Sheriff, and renowned Hollywood Stuntman Len Glascow joined the Los Angeles chapter of the Buffalo Soldiers in 1966 and was their President for twenty years. Dedicated to pioneering and trailblazing the tradition of the 10th Cavalry Buffalo Soldiers, their drill team was featured in a parade sequence of the 1969 Barbra Streisand film HELLO DOLLY.
The group then became the focus of an award winning episode of the television series THE HIGH CHAPARRAL. Glascow and company were then recruited by Eddie Smith to become the pioneers of the Black Stuntmen's Association (BSA) in 1967. Glascow went on to a long and distinguished career as a Hollywood stunt man and actor until his retirement 36 years later.
This HISTORIC lot consists of Len Glascow's personally used and worn Buffalo Soldier Cavalry Boots (his initials are written inside each boot). I'm estimating they are about a size 11. There are no other markings. Also included are his Buffalo Soldier vintage leather cowboy gloves. I cannot say just how old the boots and gloves are. They are unmarked and clearly very old and show much use. The BS shirt also has no markings but is most likely an antique reproduction. Also included is Glascow's Buffalo Soldier member ledger from 1967, filled with the names and muster of all the members that year. Many of the names within became the first black stuntmen in Hollywood. There is a large photograph of Mr. Glascow in uniform, as well as a 1986 Commendation from the City of Los Angeles to the Buffalo Soldier Chapter on the occasion of their 20th Anniversary.
Speaking of his Buffalo Soldiers days, before Hollywood called, Glascow recalled We were doing stunts off of horses and fights already. Eddie Smith said, You guys might as well join. Augmented by an assortment of extras and former athletes, the future stuntmen trained strenuously on weekends, riding motorcycles, learning to fall off horses and piloting rental cars through traffic cones.
At Athens Park in South L. The group would practice fight scenes and do high falls off backstops and bleachers on to mattresses. Wed look across the street and thered always be cops in unmarked police cars watching we figured they thought we were another Black Panther group forming.
